'Dalit' means 'broken people'. This is how 'untouchables' wish to be called. Dalits are forced to live in segregated slums, engage in bonded labour and denied basic services because of their lineage. Caste-based discrimination remains a serious human rights problem affecting an estimated 260 million worldwide. Most them are in South Asia, with over 167 million in India alone.
"We Are Not Untouchable" is an online photo exhibition by International Dalit Solidarity Network (IDSN), a network of organisations campaigning against discrimination based on work and descent. View the photos and learn more about the growing movement for empowerment among Dalits and how you can support global campaigns against caste-based discrimination.
One World Action works with IDSN and supports the Partnership of Women in Action (PaWA), a coalition of informal women workers, Dalits and poor women in Dhaka. We also support Bangladesh Dalit Human Rights through our long-time partner, Nagorik Udyog.
